Students and institutions will be consulted in drafting Information, Communication and technology (ICT) policy and legislative documents for incorporation of their views, Cabinets Secretary Joe Mucheru has said.

Mr. Mucheru said students were key stake holders in decision making process and that the government was keen to incorporate innovative and progressive ideas from students as a requirement by the constitution on public participation to develop sound frameworks that will drive socio-political and economic development of the country.

Speaking at the Maseno University today while giving a talk on the government ICT development strategies, Mr. Mucheru called on students and scholars to provide their views of the ICT draft policy that was under review to ensure emerging issues in ICT are captured in the new document.

He challenged students to develop innovations that will provide solutions to challenges faced by various communities. He pledged government support for the promotion and consumption of such developments.

He said the government was exposing young children to technology through the Digital Literacy Program (DLP) to encourage a culture of creativity and innovative talents among the children.

The Cabinet Secretary said the government was taking deliberate steps to provide universal internet connectivity to all its citizens in an effort to prepare the country for the digital economy.
