1.2 million devices to be distributed by December.
The government will deliver 1.2 million digital devices to the 23, 000 Public Primary Schools in the country by December 2016, Cabinet Secretary for ICT Joe Mucheru had said.

Mr Mucheru said the project which is fully funded by government is being implemented jointly by the Education, ICT, Energy and Industrialization Ministries.

MrMucheru who spoke when he officially closed the 6th Innovation Africa 2016 Summit in Nairobi on the 22nd of September 2016, said for Africa to adequately prepare as an emerging economic power house, it was important to invest in empowering  the youth with ICT skills.

He said it was important to move the continent towards an ICT and knowledge driven economy to make it competitive in the global economy. He observed that ICT has the ability to level the world socio-economic playing field allowing Africa to take its strategic position.

The Cabinet Secretary said the Innovation Africa 2016 Summit was a great success as it brought together government officials, educationists, universities and captains of industry to advance public-private partnerships in education, science and ICT and research in Sub-Sahara Africa.

He said there is need for the public and private sector to synergize efforts to spur innovation and create opportunities in the continent.

He challenged governments to embrace ICT and align education curriculum with technology, allocate adequate resource to the sector and develop appropriate policies to guide the industry.
