The Cabinet Secretary for ICT, Mr Joe Mucheru has today 12th June,2019 said that Kenya Broadcast Corporation (KBC) has clinched the Free-to-air broadcast rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that kicks off on 21st June to 19th July,2019 in Cairo, Egypt.

Speaking at the Media Centre, Mr. Mucheru said that the AFCON is a biennial soccer extravaganza that brings together top Africa football nations for a competition. Mr. Mucheru said that, the tournament to held in Egypt, has grown rapidly, and is now in the 32nd edition.

“AFCON tournament is set to put Kenya on the continental map given the fact that Harambee stars are participating in the event with the full support of our President H.E Uhuru Kenyatta and the Government in totality,” Mr. Mucheru said.

The Cabinet Secretary said that KBC as a public broadcaster has a mandate to the Kenyan publics and therefore it had to acquire its rights for the public good.

“The Ministry recognizes the role played by KBC as the national broadcaster in creating cohesion and encouraging Kenyans to embrace diversity by ensuring coverage of the event against all odds and advancing Government communication more so the Big Four Agenda,” Mr. Mucheru said.

The ICT Cabinet Secretary pointed out that the government is committed to supporting KBC turn- around strategies that will transform the Corporation into a contemporary Public Broadcaster.

Mr. Mucheru urged the Management board and staff to take the opportunity and explore all strategies revamping the corporation.
