Restructuring of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) underway
The Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy is in the process of restructuring the State broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK).
Speaking when he appeared before the Senate Standing Committee on Information, Communication and Technology which was sitting to deliberate the statements and Inquiries, the Ministry’s Cabinet Secretary Hon William Kabogo Gitau said he is determined to see the two State Corporations wholly transformed.
Today's meeting follows an earlier Senate Committee on ICT meeting which sat and deliberated on the MICDE 2025 Budget Policy Statement & Debt Management Strategy and resolved to invite CS Kabogo to discuss various issues and in particular proposed projects, expenditure allocations, financial gaps, and legislative framework among other issues.
CS Kabogo was accompanied by the Principal Secretaries Prof. Edward Kisiang'ani (Broadcasting and Telecommunications) and Eng. John Tanui (ICT and Digital Economy), alongside other senior officers from the Ministry.
They shared with the Committee the progress of ongoing projects, the status of pending bills, and financing gaps in key ICT sectors that will affect the implementation of the projects.
The Committee was briefed on the BETA priorities of the Ministry, which include: the provision of 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots; the provision of broadband connectivity and equipment in 1,450 hubs; the facilitation of training youths to get online jobs; and the laying of 100,000km of fibre as part of the Digital Superhighway.
CS Kabogo urged the Committee to ring-fence the Ministry's budget and also consider the financial gaps that were presented to ensure, “we implement the programmes as envisioned within the set timeline.”
He appreciated the Committee for their dedication in developing Information, Communications and Technology. Today’s meeting was chaired by the Committee’s Vice Chairperson Sen. Miraj Abdulrahman.
