PS Isaboke Calls for Collaborative, Modern, and Inclusive Reforms at KBC
Today, June 10, 2025, The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke, has called for urgent, inclusive, and forward-looking reforms at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), underscoring the need for collaboration, modernization, and a renewed commitment to serving all Kenyans.
Speaking during a high-level meeting held today at the national broadcaster’s headquarters in Nairobi, PS Isaboke engaged with the KBC Board of Directors, Managing Director, and senior management to deliberate on strategic partnerships, alignment with government policy, and the evolving expectations of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy.
The PS emphasized the government's commitment to revamping KBC into a modern, efficient, and financially sustainable public broadcaster. "KBC must reclaim its rightful place as a trusted national voice, offering quality content and access to information to every Kenyan — especially those in unserved and underserved areas," he stated.
During the engagement, KBC Managing Director, Agnes Kalekye Nguna presented a candid overview of the challenges facing the corporation, including outdated infrastructure, protracted legal battles, historical debts, and unresolved land ownership issues. These hurdles, the MD noted, continue to impede the broadcaster's ability to effectively deliver on its public service mandate.
The meeting forms part of the Ministry’s broader restructuring efforts to transform KBC into a dynamic and digitally responsive institution. Discussions also revolved around the broadcaster's short- and long-term strategies to ensure financial viability, expand coverage, and strengthen its role in national development and cohesion.
PS Isaboke was accompanied by Secretary Administration Mr. Kimani Waweru and other senior Ministry officials. The delegation later toured various departments within KBC, interacting with staff and gaining firsthand insight into the corporation's day-to-day operations and ongoing projects.
As the digital landscape rapidly evolves, the government has pledged its support for KBC's transformation, stressing the need for innovation, inclusivity, and resilience in the face of modern media challenges.
