Piracy's Toll on Kenya's Digital Economy: Insights and Collaboration Pathways

The government remains committed to ensuring that Kenya’s digital space is secure, fair, and supportive of our creators and investors.
Today, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, H.E. Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, E.G.H. held a meeting with the leadership of MultiChoice led by Nzola Miranda, Managing Director, MultiChoice Kenya who paid him a courtesy call at the Ministry Headquarters.
Their engagement centered on the digital piracy challenge in Kenya and its far-reaching impact on our economy and creative sector.
Digital piracy is no longer a minor inconvenience but it is a major economic threat. Kenya is currently losing over KES 17 billion annually in tax revenues due to illegal streaming and IPTV platforms, while creators and rights holders are estimated to be losing more than KES 92 billion. Beyond financial losses, these illegal platforms pose serious cybersecurity risks to consumers and institutions alike.
The meeting discussed how MultiChoice capabilities can complement Government efforts, particularly in areas such as real-time IP blocking, intelligence sharing, and strengthening enforcement mechanisms.
Importantly, they explored the need to convene a national multi-stakeholder forum bringing together regulators, law enforcement, ISPs, broadcasters, creatives, and technology partners to forge a unified and coordinated approach.
"Our shared objective is to move to action, including developing a practical MOU framework among partners and reviewing the legal provisions necessary to strengthen cybersecurity and anti-piracy enforcement," the CS said.
Further noting that protecting intellectual property is protecting jobs, protecting innovation, and protecting Kenya’s digital economy.
