Empowering Youth Through Digital Skills: Launch of the Jitume Digital Hub at Mazeras VTC
Empowering Kenya’s youth with digital skills remains a central priority for the Government as it works to strengthen the nation’s digital economy.
This evening, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE), Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, officially launched the Jitume Digital Hub at Mazeras Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Kwale County. He was accompanied by the Principal Secretary, State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke.
As part of the initiative, MICDE—through Konza Technopolis—has equipped the institution with 50 computers to support digital learning. Already, over 100 students at Mazeras VTC have benefited from this transformative training.
The Jitume Digital Hub initiative is a flagship program of MICDE, implemented in collaboration with Konza Technopolis and the ICT Authority (ICTA), aimed at equipping young people with practical digital skills to boost employability and entrepreneurship.
During the launch, CS Kabogo emphasized the Government’s commitment to eliminating digital barriers. He announced plans to provide high-speed internet connectivity to Mazeras VTC and to supply additional computers to expand access to digital training.
He further highlighted that the Government is actively implementing the Digital Superhighway under the BETA Pillar, which includes the deployment of 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable across the country, establishment of 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, and the setup of 1,450 ICT hubs—one in every Ward nationwide.
PS Isaboke reiterated the Government's commitment to creating digital job opportunities. He noted that Jitume Hubs are being established to empower the youth with essential digital competencies, opening up new pathways for employment and innovation in the digital economy.
The event was graced by local leaders including Kinango MP Hon. Gonzi Rai, Nominated MP Hon. Joseph Denar, Msambweni MP Hon. Feisal Abdallah Bader, Speaker of the Kwale County Assembly Hon.
