Officials from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) are in the country on a benchmarking exercise on the effective governance of ICT sector.
The team has paid a courtesy call on the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary, Mr. Stephen Isaboke, at the Ministry Headquarters.
Speaking as the Head of delegation, Commissioner for ICT Infrastructure Development at the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance in Uganda and UCC Board Member Eng. Geoffrey Agoi stated that Uganda is amending their Communications Act and Kenya has set a good pace for benchmarking in ICTs.
“The reason why we are here is to understand the governance of the ICT sector from the perspective of Kenya,” Eng. Agoi stated.
PS Isaboke warmly welcomed the team and expressed optimism in cross-country collaborations across Africa to expand the digital space.
The PS outlined the Government’s commitment to roll out 100,000 km of fiber optic network nationally for connecting communities and supporting the creative economy.
He indicated that through the Universal Service Fund (USF) managed by the CA, national projects are rolled out to promote accessibility of ICTs in unserved and underserved areas in the country.
In matters related to cybersecurity, the PS warned that nations need to be vigilant, “the next battle is going to be online, we need safeguards against any cyber-attacks,” he said.
Adding that protecting networks and systems from cyberattacks is imperative to avoid fraud and massive interruption of operations.
The PS hailed the importance of unity noting that Africa has a lot of opportunities to explore and experiences to share, “We need to practice one Africa, one network.”
In attendance were officials from UCC, CA and the Ministry.
