Kenya Advances Plans for a Digital National Addressing System
The Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke, EBS held a consultative meeting with Ambassador Bishar Hussein, Kenya’s first Postmaster General of the Postal Corporation of Kenya, former Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, and former Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), who led a delegation to share ideas on the development of Kenya’s National Addressing System (NAS).
Amb. Hussein, drawing from his vast global experience, including overseeing the successful implementation of the UAE’s National Addressing System, offered invaluable ideas on the framework and key enablers needed for Kenya’s rollout.
The NAS project is a strategic priority under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, aimed at creating a unified, digital addressing framework that integrates physical locations, property identification and geo-spatial data. This initiative will improve service delivery, enhance urban planning, strengthen emergency response systems, streamline postal operations and boost e-commerce.
Each property, household, business and institution will receive a unique national address, forming the foundation for efficient governance, economic growth and improved connectivity. Hosting the NAS within the Ministry ensures digital integration with other Government systems, aligning with the broader digitisation agenda under the Digital Superhighway pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
PS Isaboke reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with multiple stakeholders, including other ministries, agencies and county governments, to establish a robust, inclusive and modern addressing system that supports Kenya’s vision for a connected and digitally empowered nation.
Present in the meeting were Secretary Information and Broadcasting Mr Temesi Mukani; Secretary Administration, Mr Waweru Kimani; Head of Public Communication Unit, Ms Michelle Dibo; and Mr Matano Ndaro the Director, Licensing & Compliance at the Communications Authority of Kenya.
