Kenya, EU Deepen Digital Cooperation as PS Tanui Highlights Key Policy Priorities

Kenya has reaffirmed its strong and growing digital partnership with the European Union, with a focus on building secure, trusted, and future-ready digital infrastructure.
Speaking during the EU-Kenya Tech Business Offer Forum on 18th March 2026, the Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, emphasized the importance of aligning national priorities with emerging technologies.
He noted that Kenya is well positioned to benefit from this transition, particularly through its long-standing relationship with the European Union, which spans over five decades.
“We are very happy with the relationship we have built with the EU over the last 50 years. There is a lot we can share and learn from each other,” he said.
The PS revealed that Kenya is currently advancing its national AI strategy and developing a comprehensive AI policy to guide the sector. In addition, the government is working on a data governance framework that will inform future legislation and strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem.
“This collaboration has been instrumental in shaping our AI strategy. We are now working on the AI policy and broader data governance frameworks that will lead to the necessary legislation,” he said.
Tanui added that the government is focused on creating a conducive and coordinated environment that attracts investment while supporting innovation, particularly from the private sector.
“We are seeing strong interest from investors and innovators. Our role is to ensure the environment is clear, coordinated, and flexible enough to support private sector growth,” he said.
Also present at the forum was Renate Nikolay, Deputy Director-General at the European Commission, alongside stakeholders from both regions who explored opportunities for collaboration in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence.
The forum brought together stakeholders from both regions to explore collaboration in digital infrastructure, AI, and policy development, marking another step in strengthening Kenya-EU digital cooperation.
