Strengthening Kenya’s Electrical and Electronic Manufacturing Sector
The government is keen on working with industry stakeholders to strengthen local manufacturing capacity and expand opportunities in the digital economy.
The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy Hon. William Kabogo Gitau held a consultative meeting with representatives from the manufacturing sector, led by the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Tobias Alando, on strengthening Kenya’s electronics and electrical assembly industry by streamlining policies and introducing targeted incentives for the sector.
The government will continue supporting electronics manufacturers and smartphone assemblers through the continuous review of regulations and policies in order to encourage investment in the local assembly of electronic and electrical components.
Formation of a Joint Sector Working Group was agreed upon to bring together representatives from key ministries and industry players to develop a comprehensive policy proposal.
Stakeholders agreed to work towards addressing challenges such as slow import processes for electronic components and regulatory delays that often disrupt production timelines and undermine global competitiveness.
Addressing these challenges will spur jobs creation, strengthen Kenya’s digital economy, and position the country as a leading electronics manufacturing hub in Africa.
Among those present were Principal Secretary Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, Secretary ICT, Digital Economy and Emerging Technologies, Mary Kerema, Secretary ICT and Digital Infrastructure Mr. Washington Okoth, representatives from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, M-KOPA, and several local manufacturing companies.
