Leveraging Emerging Technology for Universal Health Coverage

As the 9th Devolution Conference (DevCon 2025) unfolds in Homa Bay County, a pivotal side event hosted by Jacaranda Health explored the intersection of healthcare and digital transformation.

Dubbed “Health and Technology: Leveraging Emerging Technology to Achieve Universal Health Coverage,” the session brought together policymakers, technology, and health experts to discuss scalable solutions for equitable heath care.

During the high level discussion Eng. John Tanui, CBS, Principal Secretary for ICT and Digital Economy, emphasized on the government's committment to expanding broadband and enhancing last-mile connectivity, crucial for effective deployment of digital health solutions nationwide.

Additionally, he articulated how Artificial Intelligence, integrated into clinical workflows, can empower healthcare providers across Kenya to deliver faster and more precise diagnoses.

The leaders shared diverse perspectives on leveraging technology to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC), placing significant emphasis on inclusion to all segments of society, including marginalized and vulnerable populations such as those in rural areas, persons with disabilities, women, and low-income groups.

PS Tanui further noted that the Kenya Digital Master Plan 2022-2032 coupled with supportive policies such as the Kenya’s AI Strategy and the recently enacted Cloud Policy  provide a strong framework for sustainable innovation, backed by Public-Private Partnerships to ensure that digital transformation translates into tangible healthcare improvements for all Kenyans.

The side event featured an esteemed panel including Murang’a Governor H.E. Dr. Irungu Kang’ata, Makueni Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Olunga, Jacaranda Health Co-Executive Director Ms. Cynthia Kahumbura, and PROMPTS beneficiary Ms. Moreen Maria.
