Dangote Refinery Breakthrough Marks Major Milestone for Kenya’s Industrialisation Agenda
Kenya has marked a major milestone in its industrialisation journey with the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Refinery in Mokowe, Lamu County by H.E President Dr William Ruto, accompanied by the President of the Dangote Group, Mr Aliko Dangote.
Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke, EBS, witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony, which marks the beginning of a major investment expected to strengthen Kenya’s industrial base and stimulate economic activity along the LAPSSET Corridor.

The planned refinery, with a capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, is expected to be the largest in East and Central Africa and among the largest globally. The project will form part of an integrated industrial complex that will also include a 1,000MW power plant as well as fertiliser and chemical manufacturing facilities.
The investment is expected to create jobs, develop local skills and expertise, and open new opportunities for young people and future generations. It is also expected to strengthen the industrial base and unlock new economic opportunities in the region.
The project demonstrates the potential of large-scale investment to drive economic growth, attract further investment and create opportunities across multiple sectors of the economy.
Also in attendance were Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Benin President Romuald Wadagni, Togolese President Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, alongside other distinguished guests from across the world.
The development is expected to contribute to the long-term transformation of Lamu and the wider LAPSSET Corridor, positioning Kenya as an important hub for industrial and economic activity.
