Government Strengthens Communication Preparedness Ahead of El Niño

The Government has commenced preparations to strengthen national crisis communication and public awareness ahead of the anticipated El Niño phenomenon during the October–December 2026 period.

Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke, EBS, today chaired the inaugural meeting of the National Crisis Communication Standing Committee, which brings together key Government institutions to strengthen preparedness, coordination and communication in response to emerging national crises and events of significant public interest.

The inaugural meeting focused on preparedness for the anticipated El Niño conditions, with discussions centred on strengthening early warning systems, mitigation measures and coordinated public communication to ensure Kenyans receive timely, accurate and actionable information.

PS Isaboke emphasised the importance of proactive communication in crisis preparedness, noting that timely dissemination of reliable information enables citizens and communities to take appropriate measures and reduces the impact of emergencies.

The Principal Secretary was accompanied by Government Spokesperson Mr. Charles Owino; Secretary Public Communication Ms. Patricia Ondeng; and Director General of the Communications Authority of Kenya, Mr. David Mugonyi.

Also present were representatives from the National Treasury, Kenya Meteorological Department, State Department for Roads, State Department for Water, the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications and the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy.
