Nation Media Group CEO Pays Courtesy Call to PS Broadcasting and Telecommunications
Nation Media Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Geoffrey Odundo, on Tuesday, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Stephen Isaboke, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, under the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy.
During the meeting, Mr. Isaboke reaffirmed the government's unwavering commitment to fostering an enabling environment for the media industry, which he acknowledged plays a critical watchdog role in society.
“Kenya remains a regional leader in upholding media freedom and freedom of expression. Our dedication to protecting press freedom and safeguarding the right to free expression—as pillars of a democratic society—is resolute,” Mr. Isaboke said.
He further noted that while advancements in technology have significantly improved public access to information, they have also created new challenges, particularly the spread of fake news, misinformation, and disinformation. He emphasized the importance of responsible journalism and media literacy in addressing these concerns.
In response, Mr. Odundo expressed appreciation for the government's support and highlighted the need for continued collaboration between the public and private sectors to strengthen the media ecosystem. He also appealed to the Principal Secretary to intervene in facilitating the settlement of pending payments related to the circulation of MyGov, a government publication published by the Government Advertising Agency (GAA).
“The media industry continues to play a vital role in informing the public and supporting government communication. Timely settlement of dues such as those for MyGov circulation would greatly support our sustainability and operations,” Mr. Odundo noted.
The meeting underscored the shared commitment between the government and media stakeholders to uphold press freedom, promote responsible journalism, and navigate the evolving information landscape collaboratively.
Also in attendance were Monica Weceke, NMG Corporate Affairs, Washington Gikunju, Managing Editor, Publishing, Alex Ndegwa, Lead Editor, Daily Nation, James Sogoti, General Manager, Commercial, Michael Okidi, and Director at the Government Advertising Agency.
