ICT Cabinet Secretary Spearheads the planting of 20,000 tree seedlings in Nandi County
The Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications and The Digital Economy (MICDE) H.E Hon. William Kabogo, E.G.H today participated in a tree planting exercise in King' wal swamp, Nandi County.
The tree planting exercise themed "Grow Trees, Conserve King'wal Swamp and Save Siatung'a" targets to plant 20,000 tree seedlings within the 54 hectares Swamp. The exercise was organised by the Ministry, ICT Authority, the County Government of Nandi and the local community led by the Nandi County Commissioner Mr. Wilberforce Kilonzo.
The Campaign is part of the National tree planting effort under the National Tree growing and Restoration Campaign launched on 21st December 2022 by H.E Dr. William Samoei Ruto which targets to increase Kenya's tree cover to 30 percent by planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Speaking while officiating the ceremony, CS Kabogo noted that the exercise directly contributes to the national ambition noting that the Ministry recognises environmental conservation and stability as part of the Digital Transformation Agenda.
"Today’s initiative is not just about planting trees— it is about restoring life, protecting biodiversity, and securing the future of our environment and our communities. Wetlands such as King’wal Swamp play a critical role in water regulation, climate resilience, and as habitats for unique species like the sitatung'a. When we reclaim and restore them, we safeguard both nature and livelihoods, " said CS Kabogo.
The Cabinet Secretary commended the county government leadership for bringing together government, agencies, and the community in this noble cause adding that the success of the initiative lies in community ownership.
"Let us continue working together to grow trees, restore ecosystems, and build a sustainable Kenya, " added CS Kabogo.
