Government Unveils E-Waste Guidelines to Drive Sustainable Digital Transformation

By Shalphine Mukasia

The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy has launched the E-Waste National Guidelines and Implementation Framework, aimed at addressing the growing challenge of electronic waste in Kenya.

The launch brought together key stakeholders from government, the private sector, academia, civil society, and development partners, all united in their commitment to promote responsible e-waste management and safeguard the environment.

The guidelines provide a structured roadmap for the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of electronic waste nationwide.

They clearly define the roles of producers, consumers, recyclers and government agencies, emphasizing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and public awareness to ensure a cleaner and safer environment.

The State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy Principal Secretary, Eng. John Tanui, in his speech read by the Acting Secretary, ICT, Digital Governance and Data Governance Directorate, Mr. Bernard K. Rotich, noted that the guidelines mark a turning point in how Kenya manages the end-of-life of electronic devices.

“We are embracing a system that not only protects public health and the environment but also unlocks opportunities for green jobs and circular economy innovation.” He said.

Mr. Rotich further reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote clean and sustainable technology adoption, including expanding digital infrastructure and ensuring inclusivity for citizens in both urban and rural areas.

Participants at the event lauded the guidelines as a timely and critical step toward ensuring that Kenya’s rapid digital growth aligns with sustainable environmental practices.

Head of Digital Economy at the Digital Transformation Centre Kenya (GIZ), Katharina Mengede, reaffirmed GIZ’s support for the government’s efforts toward sustainable digital transformation.

She noted that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to promoting environmentally responsible innovation and inclusive growth across Kenya’s digital landscape.

The new framework reflects the government’s broader vision to integrate sustainability into Kenya’s digital transformation agenda, ensuring that technological progress goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship.

The framework was developed in partnership with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre and supported by development partners, including the German Embassy in Nairobi.
