The Government appreciates the significant role of radio as a powerful medium of informing masses on the effects of climate change.
Speaking as the Chief Guest during the World Radio Day 2025 celebrations convened by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), the Principal Secretary, Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Prof. Edward Kisiang’ani appreciated this year’s theme; ‘Radio and Climate Change,’ noting that it is anchored on the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) sixth Pillar of Environment and Climate Change.
“We want radio to play a major role and become a partner in environmental advocacy and educating listeners,” the PS stated while reiterating that the media has a key role of engaging experts in environmental matters in their radio shows to enlighten listeners on changing weather patterns and how to adjust accordingly.
PS Kisiang’ani urged MCK to conduct special programmes to train journalists on highlighting climate change matters in a factual and wholesome way.
The PS appreciated the rich legacy left by renowned journalist, the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela and urged journalists to emulate his example.
On his part, MCK CEO Mr. David Omwoyo acknowledged the dedication of veteran broadcasters and called for mentorship programmes to pass on the baton to upcoming journalists.
“We need to plough back the veterans and the seniors in the media sector to mentor upcoming journalists. Hold the hands of those joining the media to ensure consistent cross-pollination of ideas,” he added.
Mr. Omwoyo noted the importance of radio as a unique medium that reaches out to listeners at the grassroots level and enables listeners to multitask while still listening to radio programmes.
